Rainbow Reef Resort is the artistic
creation of Richard and Kari Steirs. Nestled in the jungle on an inaccessible
perfect crescent white sand beach (accessible only by boat), the Steirs moved
their 3 children to this remote paradise to create a slice of heaven. I've know
the Steirs since about 1996 when they began buying their airline tickets to
Fiji from my office. They are from Maui, which is also my home. Richard is a
master bronze sculptor and jewelry designer whose creative genius manifests
itself in every facet of this small intimate resort. With only three Bures (boorays),
the emphasis here is on unique touches, great food and then more great touches.
The first time I came here was 3 years ago, about 3 weeks before they actually
opened to the public. Four of us from my office came for a pre-opening test
run. The food was so incredible that we had to beg them to stop feeding us.
We spent 2 days enjoying and helping to fine tune for their real opening. Since
then, I had wanted to come back but they were usually sold out when I would
be in Fiji. I was lucky to get in this trip. I am traveling alone for 1 week
before Ron and Tee from my office join me. I am sitting here, typing this "review"
on my Mac Powerbook, almost at water's edge, with a chilled glass of bubbly
champagne. I take my job very seriously and must create the "correct"
environment for describing how wonderful it is here. If you, a prospective client
of our Travel Company, might drink champagne while watching the sunset - then
it is my duty to do the same. Someone MUST bring you this much needed information,
right? My husband says that it can't be work. That I like what I do too much.
One of our mottos at work is... "It's for the good of the company"!
That explains it all in a nutshell, don't you think?
So, let me tell you why I LOVE Rainbow Reef Resort. I love my Bure. I am in
the Orchid Bure which has a jacuzzi on the deck. I am at the end of the beach
with jungle behind my Bure, and the beach in front of my Bure. When I come to
these resorts, I have made a commitment to my staff to experience all aspects
of the resort including a variety of activities. Again, keeping our company
motto in mind, I spent some time in the hammock and chose the jungle view (instead
of the oceanview) so I could watch the Kingfishers (cute birds) darting about
catching bugs. Later, I took the "lid" off the Softtub Jacuzzi and
watched the ocean lap on the shore from my own bubbling tub. Granted, this whole
experience would have been so much better if my husband had been with me, but
I have an excellent imagination on how the workings of this resort would result
in countless romantic moments. This morning I had coffee delivered to my bure
and I sat in my deck chair, on my porch, breathing in the salt air and the beauty
around me as the sun rose from the east (versus any other direction!!!). Already
today I have been shell collecting, snorkeling (it was the prettiest, most colorful,
hard coral I think I have ever seen in Fiji), sunning on the floating platform
offshore, kayaking, napping, showering in the outdoor shower with the jungle
canopy overhead, enjoying a delicious meal and relaxing to my hearts content.
My Bure is soo sweet. The four poster bed is framed with soft white veils and
the view is looking out sliding glass doors toward the ocean. The reed walls
are a perfect tropical touch in this delightfully appointed room, with indoor/outdoor
carpet (unheard of in Fiji - carpet that is), colorful flower arrangements,
a CD player (soon to play Beethoven to Relax By), and an artsy lamp completely
out of place it is FUN... 2 coyotes dancing next to a cactus with a sliver moon
stuck in it. The bathroom has ships porthole where I am used to having a mirror
- so every time I look at myself - I see the ocean. Wow! Where did I go??? I
really do start to think that if I can't see myself I don't need mascara or
lipstick!!?? (Don't worry gals, the mirror is over to the right). Zee "toilette"
has its own closet. To shower, one must saunter down the bathroom steps to the
outdoor, jungle shower. The jungle canopy is your ceiling with all things "sky".
Birds, stars, rain.... the air is warm and a sense of Nirvana is one possible
scenario as you pinch yourself.
A few things need to be noted about Rainbow Reef before I leave this unique
and decidedly private resort. Rainbow Reef has two viewing decks with chairs
for lounging. The views are stunning and the locations are perfectly chosen
so YOU feel that you are one with this tropical paradise. Especially delightful
was KissMe Beach and Deck. What a location and what a set up.... First you descend
down stucco steps to your own "ladies room" (I have carefully selected
my description here), and then you reach the thatch covered sitting area with
steps that lead to our own private deck overlooking your own private beach (98%
private). It's good.
The other thing about Rainbow Reef is their attention to detail in the food
and food presentation department. I have yet to be served a meal with such delicate
presentation using flowers and greenery framing the food you are about to enjoy.
Once again, the creative sensitivity of Richard and Kari offer you an artful
presentation of food to delight your eyes before the food delights your palate.
First your eyes are delighted and then your taste buds!
If you are considering being married at Rainbow Reef, you will be able to plant
a coconut palm in honor of your new union. You will also be able to paint a
rock with your names to be placed by the coconut you have planted. Your special
day will be remembered for an eternity.
